An Information and Education Package for the Harlow Sculpture Collection
Location: Essex
Harlow possesses a sculpture collection of international importance which includes works by Moore, Hepworth, Frink, Rodin, etc. The collection is not well known and the project, therefore, seeks to raise local people's awareness of the unique cultural heritage asset represented by the collection, and to increase their understanding of sculpture and its techniques more generally through an education programme.
The Harlow Art Trust have produced a beautiful 112 page guide to the collection. Every sculpture in the Harlow collection is illustrated in the book with supporting information about the artist and work. 2,000 copies of the guide were printed and they have been distributed to schools and other educational providers as well as libraries and cultural attractions in and around Harlow. In addition to the guide the Harlow Art Trust have produced a fold out giveaway trail map. This can be found at pick up points in and around Harlow. In October 2004 The Harlow Art Trust ran a very successful teacher training day for art co-coordinators at Harlow primary schools. During the morning of the training day art-coordinators were given a presentation about the history of the collection as well as a guided tour. Two sculptors were employed to run practical sessions in the afternoon giving art co-coordinators new skills to take back to the classroom. The sculptors were then sent into the schools to run practical workshops with the school children. The Harlow Art Trust are currently scripting an education film about the sculpture collection for teachers. This should be completed by September 2006.
