Basildon People and Places Project...the story so far
Location: Essex
2003 was a busy year for the pupils of Wooldlands School as they have been taking part in heritage based activities ranging from local history to the environment, culminating in a performance.
A group of Drama students from the 11-16 comprehensive in Basildon, spent an enjoyable afternoon at the George Hurd Centre, a drop in Centre for senior citizens. They prepared questions before they went and interviewed the elderly people about their lives in Basildon which was only established sixty years ago. As many of the elderly people came to Basildon from the war torn East End at the outset and have seen it evolve over the years, the material collected was fascinating.
A performance based on the interviews included scenes based on Basildon life through the decades from its early days to present day and gave a feeling for how it has evolved as a town. It played to a packed house of over 300 people at the Basildon Towngate Theatre in June 2003.
A group of history students have spend time visiting Langdon Hills Nature Reserve to investigate the history of a medieval deer park. Their findings are being recorded on an information board for the park and website.
