Basildon People and Places
Location: Essex

The project will record Basildon's development from prehistoric times to the present day through the eyes of its people.

The project will largely be carried out by pupils from a local secondary school.Topics covered will include a local Iron Age settlement, the Langdon Hills Plotlands, the pre-New Town villages and early memories of the New Town.

Pupils will interview local people to collect information, which they will turn into a leaflet, CD and a community play, which they will take on tour to local community groups. They will visit the Iron Age site, which is now a nature reserve, and will write and design an interpretation board and a guided trail leaflet for it.

An exhibition about the project will be held in local library and a final publication will be produced. Pupils will create a web site to disseminate their findings widely.

The school has also requested an NBS award to help them celebrate the project by decorating a local underpass with images of local heritage and by displaying sculpture in the park.
