Beeleigh Abbey
Location: Essex

The aim of the project is to extend and build upon existing archaeological excavation work. Further archaeological investigation on the site will aim to clarify the nature, function and extent of the buildings found in 2002.

The group carried out archaeological excavation work in 2002 which led to the discovery of a late medieval hall house in a field adjacent to Beeleigh Abbey. This included one of the best sequences found in Essex of medieval timber-framed buildings. They now wish to extend and build upon this work, with help and guidance from professional archaeologists.

Further archaeological investigation on the site will aim to clarify the nature, function and extent of the buildings found in 2002. To make the project as inclusive as possible they will offer opportunities for all interested local people to participate, and will provide professional training for all.

The results of the work will be disseminated through a popular booklet and a public exhibition in Maldon town, as well as through academic publication.
