Get thee to a nunnery
Location: Essex
An article about the Local Heritage Initiative's Escaped Nun project, in Essex, has appeared in Ecclesiastical and Heritage World magazine.
The project, funded by an £11,160 LHI grant focuses on the amazing story of a girl's escape from a Roman Catholic convent at East Bergholt on 15 February, 1909.
After a distressing life at St Mary's Convent, the 18-year old nun, called Madge Moult, ran away to Manningtree railway station, pursued by a wagon full of nuns who tried to force her back to the nunnery. However, station staff took pity on the girl and helped her escape to London. Her case was taken up by campaigners seeking reform of convents and monasteries and as a result Madge Moult became quite famous and she later undertook a speaking tour, lecturing on convent life and its dangers.
The East Anglian Community project group has produced a video about these interesting events, accompanied by a leaflet for the information of local groups and schools.
