Escaped Nun
Location: Essex
The project will focus on the escape of a nun from a convent at East Bergholt in 1909. After a distressing life there, she ran away to Manningtree railway station, pursued by other nuns, but the station staff prevented her from being forced back to the convent and helped her get to London. Her case was taken up by campaigners seeking reform of convents and monasteries and she became quite famous.
The group will make a video about these events, using local amateur actors. Local groups will provide extras and props, and perform the music; local schools will help with costumes and props and scenery. Copies of the video will be widely distributed free of charge locally, and the script will be made available for local school drama groups.
The group will also produce a leaflet explaining the event to accompany the video, and will make a DVD of the making of their video, for the information of local groups and schools and for the LHI web site. Other outputs include an interpretation board about these events at Manningtree station. The group plan further similar projects exploring local heritage themes.
