Location: Essex

The water vole is a UK priority species for conservation and is in decline.

Blue House Farm, Essex, is a key site for water voles locally.

The project aims to:

1) extend and enhance water vole habitat at the site;
2) Raise the local community's awareness of water voles and their conservation generally.

The project will:
  • create ungrazed banks along ditches to provide extra vole habitat;

  • restore watercourses to provide dispersal routes allowing colonisation of other sites;

  • create higher banks along selected watercourses as winter refuges;

  • develop "vole packs" to be distributed to local schools, etc.;

  • create interpretation boards at the site;

  • run a water vole surveying training day during National Mammal Week to establish a trained local volunteer group to monitor water voles in future;

  • run events where the local community can visit the site and participate in the project;

  • create a travelling exhibition about the site and project to be taken to talks, fetes and shows;

  • visit local primary schools to explain the importance of the site and the project.
