Schools' Art Competition
Location: Essex

In the first two King Harold Days, in 2004 and 2005, we had an Art Competition for all the schools in the town.

There will also be a competition in 2006.

Schools’ Art Competition

The King Harold Day Committee believes that, as well as entertainment, the event should have an educational focus, and wants schools to be involved.

The Head Teachers of all the local Primary Schools were contacted and asked to take part in an Art Competition. The subject for 2004 was the Bayeux Tapestry. There were two classes for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 children. The entries were outstanding, and caused the judges some problems in deciding the winners.

In 2005, the topic for the Competition was 11th Century life, and again the entries were excellent. Some of them are shown on this page. Also in 2005, King Harold School, the town’s secondary school, entered art works done by Key Stage 3 pupils as a separate Competition. These were decorated clay plaques designed to look as if they were masonry fallen from the Abbey walls.

The Competition judges were Cllr Antony Watts, Mayor of Waltham Abbey; Ron Chapman, local artist; Jonathan Foster, Head of Art at the local secondary school; and Isabelle Perrichon from the KHD committee.

The entries were displayed in the Lady Chapel of the Abbey Church, and it was there that the prizegiving took place. Elaine Fletcher, Chairman of KHD, and The Rev’d Canon Martin Webster, Rector of Waltham Abbey, presented certificates and vouchers to the winners, who were: Key Stage 1 - Hillhouse Church of England Primary School; Key Stage 2 - Waltham Holy Cross Junior School; King Harold School Key Stage 3 Competition - Georgia Dunbar, Christopher Wade and Vicky Heath.

In 2006 the competition for the King Harold School’s Key Stage 3 pupils will be armorial shields made of clay. The primary schools have been invited to cover the topic of shields, weapons and armour.

Isabelle commented: “Even the very young children have come up with some wonderful ideas for these competitions, and the results are outstanding. We have some great artists in Waltham Abbey.”
