Sites for the Interpretative Boards
Location: Essex
We have now reached the stage of designing the boards and preparing text and images for their content. This list gives details of where the boards will be placed in the Abbey Gardens.
Sites for the Twelve Interpretative Boards Waltham Abbey Churchyard and Abbey Gardens
The images on the Boards will be painted by a water colour artist.
Boards 1 and 2, near the entrance from the car park and Abbey Forge - The Lee Valley Regional Park is funding these boards. The first will be a general board about the site with a sketch map of where the historical points are. The second will be the site of the Abbey Forge.
Board 3 - just inside churchyard entrance - This will include the fact that the site has been a place of worship since the 7th century, and is still a place of worship. Also that it is the most recent of the five or six churches known to have been on the site. Waltham Abbey Church’s logo will be on the board.
Boards 4 and 5 - where three paths cross in the churchyard - There will be two panels depicting the series of churches on the site. They will be shown within the landscape of the Abbey estate, showing the Fish Ponds, dock, Infirmary, etc. They will be mostly pictorial boards with just a few captions. The only known item from the first church is the Waltham Clasp, and a picture of that may be shown. The marker stones in the grass showing the outlines of the Abbey will be noted.
Board 6 - The Cloisters - dating from the time of the Great Abbey. The board will focus on what the cloisters were for, and will show two Canons, one walking and one sitting. Board 7 - Wall across the Abbey Gardens, near re-used Purbeck stones - This is on the site of the Chapter House. The Board could show a meeting of Canons or an Abbott’s burial. The re-used stones are pillars from the Church, which were used in the building of the 16th century Abbey House.
Board 8 - other side of wall, near fireplace/chimney of Abbey House - This will show a representation of how the house might have looked. Built by Edward Denny 1590.
Board 9 - Midnight Chapel - This was not used as a chapel but was the entrance to the Cloisters. It was gothic and part of the 13th century Abbey.
Board 10 - Gatehouse/Gateway - This will show an image of the gatehouse of the Great Abbey built in 1370. Local bricks were used in the gateway and wall.
Board 11 - Stony Bridge - The Board will show this was once an important road built to link the Abbey estate with the Abbey.
Board 12 - the Harold Memorial Stone - This will include a representation of Harold’s coronation.
