Riverside Living
Location: Essex
Riverside Living is a partnership project between Colchester Museums, Braintree District Museum, The River Colne Countryside Project, Halstead in Bloom, The John Ray Trust and The Gateway Award Group. Its aim is to involve local community groups in hands - on creative conservation work on the banks of the river Colne in Essex.
The conservation work undertaken on the riverbank will focus on the creation of various wildlife habitats, regenerating an area of the bank which has recently been made more accessible to the general public. Alongside this practical conservation work, two artists will work in residency with The Gateway Award Group (a local branch of the organisation MENCAP) to produce a bespoke interpretation board that will highlight some of the local flora and fauna.
As 2005 marks the 300th year anniversary of the death of the local naturalist John Ray, The John Ray Trust is holding a number of events to celebrate his lifetime’s achievements. It is hoped that the work produced from the Riverside Living project will be displayed at the John Ray Conference in May 2005 and form the subject material for two temporary museum exhibitions later in the year.
