The Mosaic Project
Location: Essex

The finished mosaic is now displayed in the public entrance to the council offices in Rochford, providing a unique welcome. It depicts two important historic buildings in our District, the Windmill in Rayleigh and the Old House in Rochford. The mosaic was created by visitors to the "Unlock!" Rochford's History Day with tuition from a local professional mosaic artist.

Hundreds of local people gathered to see the unveiling of the finished mosaic at the entrance to the local council offices. A newspaper appeal had found many of the people involved on the day, and 5 children were asked to formally unveil the project they had helped to create, along with the Chairman of Rochford Council.

As well as looking great, the mosaic has also helped bring the plight of our windmill to the attention of the government. Local MP and councilors used the project to highlight the importance of the landmark to Thames Gateway and Lottery officials and we are delighted that funding has now been secured to upgrade the building to allow visitors and exhibits.
