Why Hadstock?
Location: Essex
Hadstock is a small village with an unexpectedly large and impressive church which dates from at least the 11th Century. Excavations inside the church in the 1970's revealed earlier structures, and it has been suggested that Hadstock was the site of the monastery St.Botolph built in Icanho in 654.
The villagers would now like to undertake a trial excavation on a patch of land adjacent to the churchyard which contains earthworks. These may represent the site of the early monastery or other elements of the Saxon or medieval village of Hadstock.
The group will commission a geophysical survey of the site, then working closely with the County Archaeologist and his staff, will undertake trial excavation. Professional supervision and training will be available, but the workforce will be volunteers from the village.
opportunities to participate in the project will be open to all and will be promoted widely. There will be local public exhibitions of finds and results which will also be available on a website. The project will produce a full academic report on the work, as well as popular booklet.
Two permanent interpretation panels will be installed near the site explaining the projects findings. The group have included a generous allowance for processing, conserving and analysing finds and there is also a contingency to cover unexpected finds or costs. Other costs include insurance, volunteer costs, equipment hire and office costs.
