World War II Defences in Basildon and Castle Point
Location: Essex
This project will use teams of volunteers, guided by a professional Military historian, to track down, record, photograph and assess for statutory protection, around 100 defence works, built to protect the towns and villages in the districts of Basildon and Castle Point from expected invasion on the shores of Britain in 1940. Teams of volunteer will receive training in search and recording techniques, and will use these, plus locally-collected reminiscences to trace, visit and record the sites.
The project will produce two reports, one for each district, with an overview, records of individual sites, assessments of importance and recommendations for future protection. Reports will be deposited with libraries, museums, record office, etc, and will be available via the County Council’s web site.
