World War II Defences in Rural Colchester
Location: Essex

The aim of the project is to record the World War II defences in 30 rural parishes within the borough of Colchester, Essex. Teams of local volunteers lead by a military archaeologist from Essex County Council will track down, record and photograph around 140 pillboxes, anti-tank obstacles, Home Guard gun emplacements and airfield sites. Local volunteers will be trained in WWII search and recording techniques in order to use war time documents, aerial photographs and local memories to trace and visit each site.

The applicant intends to produce a report containing records of each site visited including an assessment of its importance and a recommendation for the future preservation of selected sites. 20 copies of the report will be produced and distributed free of charge to local record offices, museums, libraries and information centres. The document and photographs will also be available through the Essex County Council web site.
