2005 October 12th : Willow leaning over north edge of pond felled, stump ground out.
2006 January 11th : Main work begins. Contractors arrive, set up and establish safety fence and work compound.
January 12th : Coir rolls and reed mats delivered. 5 tonne digger on rubber tracks arrives. Excavation of east (roadside) bank begins.
January 13th : Excavate north and east pond margins.
January 16th : Install gravel baskets for filter beds in southeast, northeast and northwest corners.
January 17th : Install coir rolls to form terrace on east bank.
January 18th : Install coir rolls on east and north pond edges.
January 19th : Install reed mats on gravel baskets and behind north pond edge.
January 20th : Demolish old gabion in southeast corner, install new pipe to filter bed and cover over. Spread topsoil on east terraces.
January 21st : Demolish old gabion in northwest corner, install new pipe to filter bed and cover over. Re-profile north slope.
January 23rd : Contractors leave site. Fence left in place to keep people off until ground has settled and plants established.
Construction work finished.
January 31st - February 1st : Daffodil bulbs planted on north and south banks by volunteers.
February : The willow tree nearest to 'The Cricketers' 'shaped', i.e. cut back to the previous cut points.
March : When ground conditions suitable the bare ground raked by volunteers then sown with an appropriate grass seed mix.
Future plans:
When the new grass is established the plastic fencing will be removed and the white metal fence along the roadside footpath will be renovated. Interpretation board will be installed in the southeast corner.
Late Spring/Early Summer: Official opening.
October 2006 : Excess vegetation to be cleared from the pond. The summer growth will determine how much has to be cleared to maintain the desired amount of open water. To be done by supervised and correctly equipped volunteers.
