Kelshall Village Green Restoration Project
Location: Hertfordshire

The village green at Kelshall is very small, but is the only common land in the village. It has been neglected since the early part of the last century, when an ancient monument on the green was last restored. This monument (which is the stone base of an ancient cross, removed in antiquity from the nearby church) has also deteriorated, and the whole area needs restoration.

The project will re-grade the green to make access easier for everyone, will restore the ancient cross, create a new plinth for it and install new paving and seating around it. A new stone cross will show what the ancient cross looked like, and will contain interpretation panels explaining the story of the cross and the history and natural history of Kelshall. A booklet on similar themes will also be produced.

The group have plans for the future, which include further access and interpretation work on the village green, as well as improved arrangements for long-term monitoring and maintenance.
