Restoration of Letchmore Heath Village Pond
Location: Hertfordshire

Letchmore Heath pond is the focal point of a small hamlet in Aldenham. Before this project it was polluted because of over feeding of the ducks. This resulted in high nutrient levels, leading to bacterial blooms that use up oxygen, thus killing most other wildlife and vegetation.

The first stages of work involved removing the polluted silt, rebuilding the island and the banks with special materials, and planting native pond plants along the margins. Over hanging trees were cut back.

An interpretation panel and leaflets will describe the history and the wildlife of the pond, and will discourage people from feeding the ducks.
