Braille plaque honours composer
Location: Hertfordshire
The needs of blind and partially sighted people were recognised at a recent unveiling ceremony in Stevenage.
A Braille plaque was unveiled to the composer Elizabeth Poston who was born locally 100 years ago and died in 1987.
The plaque describes the adjacent monument ‘Only Connect’ erected to her friend, EM Forster, which is unique because it is the only one in the world to the novelist who spent his early years in Stevenage at Rooks Nest House, the inspiration for Howards End.
Tony Edwards, chief executive officer of the Hertfordshire Society for the Blind, performed the unveiling ceremony, with town MP Barbara Follett, Mayor Simon Speller and members of the Friends of the Forster Country and the public in attendance.
Money for the plaque came from the Local Heritage Initiative, which sponsored the Elizabeth Poston centenary celebration events held in the area.
