The Friends of the Forster Country (FoFC)
Location: Hertfordshire

The Forster country is an area north of Stevenage that was dear to the heart of the novelist E.M. Forster, who lived nearby at Rook’s Nest House (the inspiration for Howard’s End). The novelist’s friend, Elizabeth Poston, later occupied the property and the project celebrates the centenary of her birth in Stevenage in 1905.

She was a composer, and the project will transcribe and perform some of her works, some of which have never been performed before. Concerts will be free or have a nominal admission charge.

Her links with Forster, and with other contemporary composers such as Vaughan Williams and Peter Warlock, will also be celebrated, along with her local life in Stevenage, where she encouraged amateur music making. She also shared with Forster a love of this part of the world.

Apart from musical performances, the project will produce a video, booklet and exhibition at Stevenage Museum about the life and work of Elizabeth Poston, an academic seminar on the same theme, with published proceedings, and an art project for local schools exploring her carol Jesus Christ the Apple Tree. Local schools will also be involved in the concerts.
