The Desert Rats is the nickname of the 7th Armoured Division, one of the most famous divisions in the British Army. Their former training camp is in Thetford Forest Park in Norfolk. This was their only UK base, the place where they trained for the D-day landings in 1944.
The group will construct an easy access trail suitable for the less able-bodied. Interpretation boards will explain the daily life of the camp, the specialist training given and the part played by the Desert Rats in the Second World War. This will also include the significance of Thetford Forest Park as a military training arena since the Napoleonic Wars.
Information, stories and photographs for the boards will be collected from both veterans and local people. Local volunteers will clear the sites of former buildings, tank parks, etc, make a detailed survey of the site and will also train as volunteer guides. Plans for the future include: restoring a Nissen hut complete with period furniture.
