Bring to light- Detect, dig and discover Thetfords history
Location: Norfolk
Thetford has a unique archaeological heritage, having been an important centre since the Iron Age. The group will explore this heritage through a community-focussed archaeological excavation in the grounds of a primary school in the town. Numerous excavations have already taken place in Thetford, but few have involved the local community on this scale.
The project will take place in the summer holidays and will be open to up to 60 residents per day through a booking system. Archaeological supervision and training will be provided by a professional archaeology unit. The group will draw volunteers from every walk of life in Thetford, including adults with disabilities and children. Linked activities, such as metal detecting, artwork, drawing finds and conservation will also take place.
There will be daily summaries of results from archaeologists on the site, an on-line diary, a final exhibition and public lecture at the end of the project. A travelling exhibition will be produced to bring the results to those who cannot visit the site. A formal report will be produced and made widely available locally. Finds will be held locally at the Ancient House Museum.
