Volunteers re-ignite historic fire station's glorious past
Norfolk's oldest fire station has now been restored to its former glory thanks to a grant of almost £5,000 from LHI.
The tiny Stalham Fire House which was built in 1833, is the second oldest fire station in the country and a Grade II listed building. Over the last 169 years it has seen plenty of action but until recently lay in a state of dereliction.
Stalham Old Fire House continued in use until 1962. Now thanks to a dedicated band of volunteers the fire house, which is the size of a small garage, has been carefully restored and will house a selection of fire fighting memorabilia.
Christine Lloyd, secretary of the Stalham Old Fire House and Clink Preservation Trust said: "We are delighted to have received funding from the Local Heritage Initiative for this project. The fire house is a very important piece of Stalham's history and now thanks to all the support we have had, it will be preserved for future generations. We plan to open the fire house during the summer months and it will also be made available during the winter to members of the public who are interested in viewing it."
