Yaxham St Peter's P.C.C.
Location: Norfolk

This project arose from local people's concerns about the state of an ancient wall in their churchyard. The project has been broadened, however, to become an all-encompassing review by local people of their heritage. It aims to raise local people's awareness of heritage and to enhance their understanding of why and how it should be cared for, both now and in the future.

The project starting point was to restore the churchyard wall and repair a listed tomb in the churchyard.
It grew to include:
  • improved lighting in the churchyard

  • an environmental survey of the churchyard

  • the production of a leaflet-guided heritage trail through the village

  • the creation of a cross-stitch wall hanging depicting the history of the village for display in the village hal

  • the development of a village web site.
  • The group, working closely with the local primary school, will also record all aspects of the project using video, photos, drawings and creative writing.
