All Aboard HMS Ganges
Location: Suffolk
HMS Ganges was from 1905 to 1975 the largest Royal Naval training establishment in the UK. As the largest local employer for many years, it had a huge effect on the local economy and social history of Shotley.
Following its closure, an association of ex-servicemen established a museum on the site. This project aims to increase access to the museum’s collections for everybody, and to develop specific activities with local schools and community groups to improve local understanding of the place of HMS Ganges in Shotley’s local heritage.
The project will digitise and make available on line over 5,000 historic photographs and documents. Using local teachers as consultants, the group will also develop appropriate educational resources based on the museum’s collections. This will be linked to the National Curriculum, and will enhance the local history studies of several local schools.
The package will be available at the museum and also via the internet. Talks will be given to local community groups, who will be invited to contribute their own images and memories about the site.
The group are working very closely with the County Council’s Museums Officer and the County Record Office, who both strongly support this project
