Day 12 Tuesday September 7th 2004 “Yeay!” Jezz
This was the day of ‘real archaeology’. There were fewer finds but many important features are being uncovered: a possible floor (found by Richard Newman and Chris), many post holes of varying sizes and shapes, and the two long trenches which show up on the geo-physical survey. There is even some expectation that Richard, Hugh and Pippa have hit on the famous ‘corner’. Jezz is very pleased (see quote) and hopes that Jude Plouviez will accept that there is a lot more to the site when she returns.
Duncan put in time drawing one of the post holes. He does this with accurate measurements and because his interpretation of the area can then be related to the photo, giving a clearer picture of what is there than can be achieved by looking at one alone.
Audrey Boyle from the Suffolk Wildlife Trust paid her second visit. She is their Press Officer and will arrange our publicity. Her team of photographers will be on site on Thursday.
David Gillingwater who will produce our website also arrived. He will give the site our own particular ‘style’; it will contain the final reports and interpretations of the professional team, after they have had time to study the results of the Barber’s Point dig.
There were about 22 people on site today.
Possible Trench layouts
These were probably used for keeping animals out, a status symbol, or defence (unlikely). The layout should become clearer over the next few days.
