Barbers Point Roman Site
Location: Suffolk
Barbers point is a promontory in the River Alde. Roman artefacts were found there during a cursory dig in 1907. Recent test pits by the applicant have revealed Roman pottery and a geophysical survey suggested the presence of walls and/or ditches. The group wish to investigate the site further, but with professional training and with proper supervision. Local volunteers will be recruited for various roles, including: site workers, presenters showing visitors around the site, display creators for the museum and mobile displays and caterers.
The local primary school will be heavily involved, as will many local businesses who will provide in-kind support. During the project there will be displays about the site and its context at Aldeburgh museum, and on completion, a permanent display. The group will also create a mobile display which will be used in giving presentations to local other groups and schools. They will also produce a leaflet, to be placed in local hotels and shops.
