Images of Bury St Edmunds
Location: Suffolk
The project will digitise and make available online, a unique collection of glass negatives (numbering 672) depicting early images of Bury St Edmunds. Although the collection is currently stored in the County Record Office, access to it is limited. New and existing volunteers will receive training on the historical context of the collection and descriptive caption writing, as well as use of historical sources and relevant computer skills.
A photographic competition will be held to invite comparisons with modern day images of the town. A lecture will be held and a photograph will be published in the local paper each week, inviting local people to contribute their memories and knowledge. Suffolk Record Office has provided specialist advice and skills and this will continue.
The digitisation will be carried out by professionals, but the group will co-ordinate and publicise it and seek public support, interest and participation in the researching of photos and writing of captions.
