Images of Haverhill
Location: Suffolk
Haverhill and District Local History Group own an important collection of photographs depicting the history of the town of Haverhill from the 1860's onwards. The project sought to catalogue and ensure that it is stored in appropriate archival standard storage.
In addition, key historic photographs needing urgent conservation were treated by a professional conservator. Copies of the photographs have provided a duplicate collection for public access and consultation. The Group created an exhibition about their collection and made this available on CD-ROM at the Bury St. Edmunds branch of Suffolk Record Office, the local library and schools.
They worked with a local middle school to produce a PowerPoint presentation and laminated sets of 'then and now' photos for school use. Selected photos are displayed in the town library, and others were published in the local paper to provoke reminiscences, identification of people and events depicted, and donations of more photographs.
A leaflet about the collection was also produced.
