Dash End in the 1950s. This area is now called Dash End Lane. Maurice Phillips was born in the first of these thatched houses. Only one is left now. A housing estate started in the 1960s now has the name Dash End. People still have trouble finding the house they want because of the similarity. © Maurice Phillips

Kedington W.I. was established in 1924. Trees have been planted to celebrate a number of anniversaries. A bursary of £100 from Yorkshire Tea enabled the W.I. to plant four trees in 2004. © Val Farthing
The workhouse became a mental hospital in 1937. It had also been used for prisoners of war between 1914 and 1918. The building was demolished in 1997. A housing development replaced it, though there are still sheltered homes and health administration buildings there. In 1988 the workhouse was still a convenient starting point for the fancy dress floats that begin the annual Meadowlark fete of the Kedington Community Association. © Val Farthing
Simms Farm was one of the few that were not owned by Frank Sainsbury between 1903 and 1955. Orris Rowlinson owned it until 1957. His family are still in the area, some at the Plough Inn, just outside the parish, and Peggy Mizon (nee Rowlinson) at Barnardiston. © Peggy Mizon

Kedington Heritage Project
Location: Suffolk

This project is collecting local information that would not normally be deposited in public records such as personal and family memories, diary entries, letters, club and society documents amongst other things.

They are also photographing local buildings, archaeological sites, hedgerows and landscape features, and also, with consent, parishioners themselves. The results of this work will be used to create a local exhibition, a booklet and a CD-ROM, on the theme of Kedington as it is now and as it was in living memory.

The project is now, in July 2006, almost half way through its three-year programme, funded by LHI. It currently comprises over 400 images from the beginning of the twentieth century to the present.

There are various categories of community life shown by the images. These include floods, which seem to have occurred on a large scale every 15 years or so, agriculture, housing, transport, institutions, community sports and leisure activities, work and nature conservation.

In October 2006 there will be a community event to publicise the project. This will be a development from the 2005 Trafalgar celebration, which featured a display on a local man who served at the battle. The evening will feature a selection of the project images, from the earliest to the most recent. It is hoped that more people will then offer images for inclusion. Other planned events for later in 2006 include a study of two farms and a tour of the village for the cubs - something that might be repeated with other local groups.

The final phase of the project will be direct appeals to local organisations for any archive material or members’ personal photographs. The group will also give talks on what they have found to other local groups and societies.
