Memories of Mendham: A Tale of Two Villages
Location: Suffolk

Mendham is a small village in the Waveney Valley in East Suffolk, in the Suffolk Rural Priority Area.

The project is involving the whole community in researching and presenting the history of the Parish. The finished presenatation was shown at an exhibition to coincide with the Queen's Golden Jubilee in June 2002.

Topics being researched include:

  • Sir Alfred Munnings, the painter, who was born in Mendham;
  • the natural heritage of the Waveney Valley;
  • the history/wildlife of the two ancient churches;
  • the site of a Cluniac priory;
  • historic farmhouses;
  • the general history of farming in the area.
  • Besides the exhibition, the project is producing a leaflet and a video about the village. After the summer exhibition the material is to be permanently displayed in the church.

    Other future plans include updating the church histories and researching and producing a book of local recipes.
