The Problem
Location: Suffolk

The effect of three very wet winters on the river banks caused considerable erosion. This is a natural consequence of huge volumes of water in the river.

This can be immensely beneficial to wildlife. For example, eroded banks provide excellent nesting potential for kingfishers which have flourished in recent years on the Sudbury riverside.

The Sudbury common lands have an excellent network of public footpaths, making the area easily accessible for sudburians and visitors.

In places footpaths had become severely eroded and a footbridge was in imminent danger of collapsing into the river . Temporary repairs were carried out to keep it open. Amazingly, the problem turned out to be 'a cloud with a silver lining'.
