Suffolk Changing Landscape
Location: Suffolk

This project follows on from a similar survey of Suffolk's landscape that took place in 1999. It is a partnership between the Women's Institute federations of East and West Suffolk, all the local planning authorities in Suffolk and the Suffolk Coasts and Heaths Project Partnership.

Small groups of 5 - 12 people from 153 different local Womens Institute groups throughout Suffolk (about 75% of the total) will survey the landscape of a 1km square of land within 3 miles of the place where they meet. They will walk over the land and record its character through mapping and photography.

There will be training through events, a handbook, a leaflet and a video. The rate, type and of sources changes in the landscape between 1999 and 2004 will be assessed and the results analysed to test the effectiveness of planning policies in protecting and enhancing landscape character.

At the end of the survey, each WI will create a display of their findings as part of a large exhibition in one central location. They will also exhibit their findings locally in each community taking part
