Walton Old hall Heritage Project
Location: Suffolk
Walton Old Hall is a medieval domestic building which survives as a fragmentary ruin on playing fields in Felixstowe, Suffolk. There is considerable local interest in it, but it is not understood. It was a Hall of the Bigod Earls of Suffolk and the headquarters of Edward III when assembling his fleet before the battle of Sluys in 1340.
Project volunteers will carry out documentary research and commission a professional geophysical survey on the site. The results of these researches will be used to create two large interpretation panels for the site, and to update and improve the display about the hall at Felixstowe Museum.
The site extends under local residents’ gardens, and finds and remains have been reported from here in the past. The group will seek permission from local residents to excavate test-pits in their gardens, and will invite contributions of information or material that has been found there in the past.
An “open day” event for local residents will be held in conjunction with the geophysical survey, to encourage interest in the site. A booklet explaining the results of the project will be produced and will be distributed free to local people.
The County Archaeologist has been working closely with the applicant for many years, and is fully supportive of this project.
