Project Progress December 2005
Location: Camden

This exciting new project is now in its final planning stages. Children and young people's involvement commences in February 2006.

Young Trails aims to:

  • Encourage children and young people to find out more about their local environment, particularly local historical events, and the places and buildings associated with them;
  • Encourage children and young people to explore urban environments and to use local resources to find out more about the history of specific areas in the borough;
  • Increase children and young peopleࢀTMs skills in historical research, creative writing and design;
  • Enrich, challenge and extend children and young peopleࢀTMs learning opportunities outside the classroom;
  • To support PHSE, Humanities, English, History and Art and Design curriculum areas.

The three walking trails will make comparisons with the past to the present day, and will be researched, designed and written by children and young people and printed into a Guide specifically designed for other children and young people to use.

Victorian children, focusing on health and welfare, The Food of Camden focusing on food production, the market trade and food processes, and Hidden Holborn focusing on landownership, street furniture and decoration, will introduce walkers to the more unusual and curious sites in Camden, unravelling unknown places and fascinating facts.

Groups of children, and CamdenࢀTMs Older PeopleࢀTMs Walking Groups will test all three walks before the final guide is drafted.

Each trail will include text, factual information, maps, photographs, information about further research, and original drawings. In the autumn the newly opened Foundling Museum will host an Exhibition to illustrate the process of the project and mark its achievements. Each school will also display the work of their pupils. The Guides will be disseminated by January 2007.
