Elderly to give youngsters tips on courting as part of Shoreditch heritage project

Vanished History - Digging Deep into Past
Location: Hackney

The group will attend 26 training sessions to develop photography, historical research, interviewing and video skills, which will be used to produce 100 DVD's of reminiscences. The DVD's will be made freely available to the local schools, community groups and other interested parties.

The group will work with youths between the ages of 8 to 16 and over 50's exploring the changes in social and cultural norms.

Topics that will be explored will be:
  • Childhood and play

  • Dating and courting

  • Family life

  • Crime and safety.


  • The group will also research the changes that have happened to Shoreditch, once the market town became one of the most densely populated areas in the City.

    The group will investigate how the second world war changed the landscape through comparing old maps from the Built Exploratory group. The results of the project will be exhibited for 3 months in the Geffrye Museum and 15 community presentations given to include and promote the heritage of Shoreditch to the wider community.

    Local Community Involvement / Partnerships:
    The Sharp End active retirement group, Haxton Hall youth group and the Geffrye Museum will link with 6 elders groups and 4 youth groups to investigate the areas social heritage.
