About the project
Location: Hounslow
Oral history enables people who have been hidden from history to be heard, and those interested in their past to record personal experiences and those of their families and communities.
It is the recording of peoples’ memories. It is a living history of unique personal experiences.
Historical documents can’t tell us everything about our past. Often they concentrate on famous people and big events and tend to miss out the ordinary, everyday experiences, especially of those on the margins of society. Oral history fills those gaps and gives us a history that includes more people.
Disability Network Hounslow has been awarded money by the Local Heritage Initiative to record the oral histories of ten local Deaf people.
The project will cover aspects of childhood memories, family and working life, and the campaign here in Hounslow for the recognition of British Sign Language.
The project will conclude with a launch, to be held in the summer of 2006 at West Middlesex Hospital, of the DVD and an exhibition of full colour portraits of the participants.
