Historic and Cultural Ennersdale
Location: Lewisham

The project will research the history of land-use in the area surrounding Ennersdale Primary School, concentrating on the period after the school was built in 1890. At that time the area was largely farmland and market gardens.

Using the nearby Lewisham Market as a focal point, the children will research what produce was grown and eaten in the locality at that time, and how it has changed to the present day. The group will also examine how the arrival of different ethnic groups in the area during the last century has affected the produce available in the market.

There are a number of Turkish and Sri Lankan families with strong links to the school. These people will help to enlarge the school's small agricultural area which will increase its capacity to teach gardening. They will alo advise on the use of the fruit and vegetables grown in ethnic recipes.

A traditional recipe book will be written by members of the local community for distribution throughout the area and for publication on the school's web site. Other project outputs will include an exhibition in Manor Park Library and Lewisham Studies Centre. The group plan to complete the project with a celebratory event.
