Kender Heritage Trail - Then & Now
Location: Lewisham
The aim of this project is to produce both an historically and geographically stimulating heritage trail for current and future use by Kender School, as well as providing a resource for the local community. Year 6 children will be involved in all stages of the trail's development to include: all research (including interviews), design and artwork, the writing and testing of the trail, the production of complementary resources (film, audio & poetry) adn the final exhibition. They will also work with professional artists to creatively examine what the area means to them.
Stage 1 will research into the area's history from its origins in market gardening (Hatcham - where rhubarb was renowned in the 18th century), an investigation of the origins of Plough Garlic Hill (now Telegraph Hill), the development of Hatcham Park House (a meeting place for those opposed to the slave trade), through the development of transport (toll gate, tram), housing, industry and the development of the area during World War II. This will include interviews with local elderly residents (one who has links with Barnes Wallis).
Stage II will be the making of a film drama based on the research, a photographic project, an audio tape and working with a poet - the web site will also be created at this time.
Stage III will be the collation of research, design and the trail pack and the production of a poetry booklet. Stage IV will culminate in an exhibition, to be initially held at the school.
