Kennington at War
Location: Southwark
Keyworth Primary School is named in memory of Leonard J. Keyworth, a soldier from Kennington who was awarded the VC in World War I. During World War II Kennington was heavily bombed. This brought about significant changes in land-use and the character of the area. The numerous allotments in the area enabled the local community to make a significant contribution to the "Dig for Victory" campaign. Less well known was the part played in this campaign by ethnic minority groups. The children of Keyworth School will work with the Royal British Legion, the Imperial War Museum and Kennington Local Library to investigate the impact of both World Wars on Kennington. The children will draw upon local archive information and record personal accounts from local senior citizens. Project outputs will include: a war time garden, which will be used to teach children methods of food production used during the War; a Wartime Recipe Book; displays at the Kennington Library and the Imperial War Museum a community celebration event at the school.
