Christ Church 150th Anniversary Artwork Project
Location: Tower Hamlets

Two classes from primary schools on the Isle of Dogs came together to complete a model of Christ Church as part of the 150th anniversary celebrations. The original building took two years to complete (1852-1854) but the children of Harbinger and Cubitt Town schools managed theirs in only 3 days! They used a paper rolling machine designed by community artist Darcy Turner and made the frame of the church from newspaper 'sticks' held together with cable ties. The frame was then decorated with images from inside and outside the church drawn by the children.
The model was the central piece in the set for the musical called 'Transported: travellers through time on the Isle of Dogs' written especially for the 150th anniversary celebrations and performed by children from St Luke's Primary School and members of Cryptics Youth Club.

Christ Church model journey continues

The giant model of Christ Church was carried in ten sections by children from St Luke's to St Luke's School for the musical on Sunday 21st November. The following week it was carried on to Cubitt Town Junior school by the class that helped to build it. The structure survived these two journeys with a bit of reinforcement and today makes a return journey to Christ Church where it will be displayed for the next few weeks. It is hoped to then move it to a final venue at the beginning of the new year.
