Christ Church 150th Anniversary Project
Location: Tower Hamlets
The project aims to celebrate, record and keep alive in a changing community, the history of Christ Church on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the completion of the building.
The project developed from a desire to find an appropriate way to mark the occasion with a concern about the lack of good, up-to-date histories, not only of Christ Church but also of the other Anglican churches on the Isle of Dogs, 2 of which are no longer in existence. Some oral histories have already been collected which generated more interest in gaining further research and archiving.
To celebrate the 150th anniversary the group will: create a time-line of artwork to be permanently housed in Christ Church marking the significant aspects of the church and local historical events; create a book to update the history of Anglican churches on the Isle of Dogs to include personal elements of reflections drawn from further oral histories; produce a leaflet outlining significant aspects of Christ Church's heritage; create an exhibition during an open week where photographs and other historical memorabilia will be on display as well as the opportunity to search the registers of the four Anglican churches that existed on the Isle of Dogs.
A Service will also be held to celebrate the occasion on 21st November 2004, where past clergy, their families and others of the parish (past & present) will attend.
An artwork project will be run in the Church as part of the event involving a community artist to build a model of Christ Church. This model will provide the set for a musical performance to be held at St Luke's school and performed by a mixed group of children from St Luke's School, the Cryptics Youth Club and members of the Christ Church congregation. The model will then be displayed in local schools on the Isle of Dogs.
Two follow-up activities will involve an intergenerational video project in partnership with Island House community centre and a further arts project to include other local primary school reflecting on sacred space past, present and future.
