Sacred Space at Seven Mills Primary School

The year 6 pupils of Seven Mills Primary School worked with community artist Darcy Turner to create their own idea of what a sacred space should look like. The models were made from 'zig', which is aluminium wire that has been bent to strengthen it. They were decorated with embossed sheets of aluminium, hammered out by the children.

The designs came from reflecting on different kinds of religious buildings, both locally and further afield and the children also looked at the current plans to redevelop St Luke's Church in the parish of the Isle of Dogs. The children looked at pictures of the original building that was severely damaged in the second world war and saw how the church hall was modified in the 1950's to produce the current church. Their designs reflect the religious diversity that now makes up the population of the Island, with influences of church, mosque and temple.
