The Lea Valley in North London has from the 15th century been a major food producer with products distributed to other parts of London by river and canal.
This project is conserving and interpreting the cultural heritage of the area. This involves investigating the history of local food production. Community volunteers are restorating derelict allotments.
Traditional foods from the allotments are being distributed locally on a not-for-profit basis. The project is making use of the nearby canal and bicycle trailers to distribute the food.
Eventually, the group hope to operate a traditional canal boat for distribution although that is not part of this project.
The project is also producing an interactive travelling exhibition and an interpretative publication. Both of these are being designed to interpret the Lea Valley heritage in the context of traditional local products.
Many local groups are pledging support for this project and local schools are also actively involved.
