Walthamstow Open Village Project
Location: Waltham Forest
The Open Village Project aims to create and sustain vibrant local engagement with the heritage of the Walthamstow village area. The area has over 1,000 years of continuous development and encompasses Grade 1 listed buildings.
The area was the site of the first car produced in England and has links to Darwin, amongst other significant historical sites and people. The project aims are to involve those residents already interested in their local heritage and to reach out to and actively encourage the rest of the community to take part in research and celebration.
This will be done with a variety of events, publications, tours, signs etc, that will have a wide-ranging appeal to this highly multi-cultural community. The group are producing a CD/Video that will encompass oral histories and information about the village. There will also be leaflets produced with information about the history of the village.
Open days and ‘School encounters’ will provide physical access to the project. An interactive website which will be linked to other local websites will also be produced and information boards will be sited around the area.
In order to ensure community inclusion the group have engaged 4 community development workers to work with groups on 4 specific themes including multicultural and social development. There is also a generous training allowance for practical training to cover all aspects of the project.
