The diverse local community
Location: Wandsworth

In south London, this new LHI project by the Boys Brigade will look at the history of the brigade and the changes in their recruitment policy to encourage more interest from ethnically diverse cultures.

This project will focus on recording and establishing former members’ recollections and memories of their time in the brigade going back to the 1930’s. The resulting work will increase the knowledge of the local community of the work the Boys Brigade did with young men in the area. It will also explore the changing ethnicity of their cultural heritage and the enriching experience that diversity is bringing to Tooting.

The documents attached to this page show some of the previously recorded history of the company and show through words and pictures how the Company has changed

The advantage such a project brings to understanding cultural differences was recently emphasized when members looked at an old photo from the 1950’s. The photo led to a discussion as to why there were no black faces in the image, which highlighted the fact that although Tooting may now be ethnically diverse, it was not fifty years ago.
