Black Poplar celebrates success
Location: Darlington
December 2002
Darlington’s Black Poplar Project saw crowds of visitors attend a weekend ceremonial planting event, held at the end of November.
Organised by Darlington Borough Council, project volunteers and local people helped to celebrate the success of the LHI funded project, which was set up to preserve the town’s population of Black poplar trees. The project has also been producing a CD of a song specially written by folk singer Vin Garbutt.
The celebration day included presentations, a mass planting session of Black Poplar saplings on the community woodland site in South Burdon, followed by the ceremonial tree planting by Darlington’s Mayor, Councillor Mrs Doris Jones. This larger single tree was planted within the grounds of the Town Hall, providing a lasting commemoration for the project and the celebration day.
Presentations were given allowing people to take away the project’s ideas and discoveries to help them establish their own Black Poplar projects in other areas. A number of the materials produced by the project will act as a basis for other organisations to use and improve on.
