Gainford Spa Village Heritage Project
Location: Darlington

Gainford Spa is a legacy from the village of Gainford’s history as a Victorian health resort. In 1834, the discovery of spa waters led to the development of the village as a tourist resort, helped in 1856 by the advent of the railway. Following vandalism, the spa bowl was restored in 2002, and now the people of Gainford wish to celebrate their spa heritage with a series of activities that will raise awareness of the historical importance of the spa itself.

Children from the local primary school will research the history of the spa by interviewing older residents, and this will be fed back to storytellers to produce stories and drama that will tell the story of Gainford’s spa heritage. An exhibition will be held; bringing together spa memorabilia, and children will work with a local artist to produce an interpretation panel, which will be sited next to the spa itself.

A commemorative booklet and postcards will be produced, outlining the history of the spa. The end of the project will be celebrated by holding a re-enactment of the opening of the spa, complete with Victorian dress, brass band and Victorian modes of transport in attendance. A video diary will record each stage of the project for posterity.
