History of The Upper Gaunless Valley
Location: Darlington

This project intends to promote and record the industrial heritage that has shaped the landscape along the Gaunless Valley. To do this parish councils, the district council and local community groups are involved. The project will document all available historical information and hold a series of activities to help the local community participate.

The local history group will collate information, including photographs, and will produce a CD-ROM. There will be courses on local history held in association with the Workers Education Authority, and an exhibition will be staged.

Guided walks will further raise awareness and volunteers will receive training to help them lead more walks, actively involving local people, schools and visitors. A dramatised walk will be organised with the local theatre group to bring Cockfield Fell to life. A hundred education packs will be produced with expert advice and liaison with local teachers.
