Community Heritage, Drama and Arts Project
Location: Durham

The project aims to investigate and interpret the history of Even wood in Victorian times, e.g. what it was like to live there, work, play; what did people wear, how did they speak, what did they do for fun? A series of workshops will engage the community in gathering information, with findings being put on display and fed into local libraries and records office.

Design workshops will focus on the restoration of a Victorian gas lamp by producing designs for this. A play based loosely on Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol’, using local dialect, will be performed during Christmas 2005, and drama and costume workshops will take place in the lead up to this event.

Following this, the project will continue with further design workshops to design and create a model of the village. A digital imaging project will coincide with this, to develop a digital record of the history and heritage of Even wood. This will use the information gathered to create an interactive CD ROM that will show the transitions of the village through time.
