Crossing The Jordan To Jerusalem
Location: Durham

The Society proposes a project to research and explain the mid 19th Century origins of Spennymoor as a town in the context of those who lived there.

Its rapid growth following the development of the colliery and introduction of the railway will be investigated via workshops led by a former county archivist, with individual and group research into census documents and other source material.

Information collated will be disseminated to the wider population by means of an exhibition, which will visit a number of community venues, a booklet, a web site and two drama and arts events which will be staged at an historical venue in the town. In addition, local schools will participate in an outreach programme. Community interest and participation will be stimulated by a launch event and the project will culminate with a full day conference. Skills will be developed in research, analysis and recording of historical data. Training and support will be provided by experienced members of the Society.
